In a historically short period, photography has conquered many fields in reporting, documentation, advertising and contemporary art. In doing so, it has crossed boundaries many times over and demolished precepts. Nevertheless, at core, it is still concerned with photographic processes. Standpoint, detail, moment—the photographic in photography. Precisely complex concepts need legible forms in order to remain communicable and be able to make a lasting impact.
The Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie intend to steer the gaze onto this essential core of photography and are looking for images that convey these qualities, too, in an independent, individual form. Images that re-attain awareness of the original force of photography and develop it in a contemporary manner.
Beneath already established photographers in the main exhibition, also young artists have the chance to show their works. The mostly young photographers show their selected works within the supporting programme. These are of a high artistic quality. This promotes the meeting of the established with the artistic newcomers. A comprehensive catalogue is published to the festival.
The complete festival programme is arranged by the four initiators of Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie, together with Ute Noll (on-photography.com) and Prof. Kris Scholz (h_da Darmstadt). The lecturers at the symposium as well as the artists in the exhibitions will be published at the beginning of 2018.
The Merck Award of Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie is awarded for the 7th time. The jury nominates three works from the approximately 30 chosen participants of the supporting programme at the beginning of the year.
Entry deadline was: 10th November 2017 (date of receipt), 20th November 2017 (extended deadline).
